Inspiration
The current biodiversity crisis is alarming, with over 1 million species threatened with extinction, as highlighted in the IPBES Global Assessment Report. Despite increased awareness, 60% of individuals cannot identify local endangered species, resulting in a disconnect that diminishes motivation for conservation efforts. Current resources lack interactivity, leading to low retention rates and limited understanding of the specific threats faced by wildlife.
What it does
The platform offers an interactive experience where users engage in scenario-based learning about wildlife conservation, explore endangered species through an interactive map, and participate in festive challenges to take action for wildlife protection. It also includes an Ecochronicle calendar highlighting key conservation days and provides long-day action plans with activities to protect wildlife during holidays.
How we built it
The platform was built using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React for a dynamic user interface. Mapbox-gl was used to create the interactive map. The backend runs on Node.js to manage user data and rewards. Key features like festive challenges, the Ecochronicle calendar, and action plans were developed to encourage user engagement, with gamification elements to keep users motivated. The design is responsive and accessible, ensuring a smooth experience across devices.
Challenges we ran into
While using Thrre.js for scenario based learning feature , it took lot of time to load glb files and positioning them correctly . As the files are very large it is taking time to load those files
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of creating an engaging platform that combines education and action for wildlife conservation . During holidays instead of wasting time this website can help to conserve wildlife as well as gives fun
What we learned
I have learned lot of things related to wildlife , some things which we didn't use before like three.js , integrating entire application and much more
What's next for SimuWild
Next for SimuWild, we plan to expand its global reach by including endangered species and challenges from around the world. We aim to introduce user-generated content, allowing users to share their conservation actions. We also plan to partner with conservation organizations for real-time data and volunteer opportunities, develop a mobile app for wider accessibility, and enhance gamification features like leaderboards to further motivate user participation. These updates will continue to inspire and engage users in meaningful wildlife conservation efforts.
