Inspiration
For fashion enthusiasts like me, it always comes as a surprise when fashion is described as the 2nd largest contributor to carbon emissions, but after research, I found that this is indeed a true fact. Through resource, it seems most of it is attributed to the consumer culture - many people are so used to cheap, non-ethical brands that fast fashion is the norm. Simply Green shifts consumer culture into a new, more sustainable norm and style.
What it does
Simply Green tackles both education and tangible action. Too many apps focus on only action or education, which doesn't have the most effective results. Simply Green changes this. First, the app focuses on consumer tastes and actions - using incentives and appealing designs such as user-curated palettes and customizable feeds for the user made entirely of ethical, eco-friendly brands. Users are motivated to shop more sustainably because of how easy it is to find top brands that fit their style, and also DIY projects offer rewards such as discounts. This allows users to complete fashion projects and reuse, reduce, recycle through daily challenges where they can earn points for discount rewards! The second part, education, is centered around the website, where users can find trending articles and read about fast fashion. They can also find top 10 ethical brands, as well as blog posts from community members, building a sense of community with the green movement.
How we built it
The app was built with figma for prototyping, while the website used css/html, node, js and also tailwind for framework
Challenges we ran into
Learning HTML and CSS while using tailwind for the first time in a solo hackathon as a beginner was very challenging, but extremely rewarding when everything finally clicked!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of the two-pronged approach I took to solving this issue! I also am proud of the research paper I wrote
What we learned
I learned a lot about what it takes to bring an idea from development to fully developed and functional, especially the interactive components!
What's next for Simply Green
Expanding on the website would definitely be a good idea; adding a place for forum posts would be effective in fostering more advice and community. Also, having the app and building it with React Native also would take it to the next level for user interactivity and UI
