Inspiration

Our inspiration came from the goal to empower every soldier with reliable technical knowledge, even in the absence of specialists.

What it does

Our solution integrates an air-gapped Large Language Model (LLM) into ATAK, offering real-time technical assistance to soldiers in the field. It delivers expert knowledge and troubleshooting guidance even without internet or specialist presence.

How we built it

The system was trained and optimized on domain-specific data to provide accurate, mission-relevant responses while maintaining strict security and isolation to prepare air-gapped LLM.

Challenges we ran into

Key challenges included ensuring the LLM performed efficiently without internet access, managing limited computational resources in the air-gapped setup, and fine-tuning the model for accurate, context-aware responses relevant to tactical operations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully fine-tuned a local LLM on military technical documentation despite limited training data, proving that specialized domain knowledge beats massive generic datasets for tactical applications. Built ATAK-integrated prototype with a professional military-grade interface. Demonstrated that offline AI assistance is feasible for denied environments where cloud-based solutions fail.

What we learned

Military-grade software prioritizes reliability and clarity over consumer-friendly features - legacy terminal aesthetics actually improve usability in tactical contexts. Offline-first design is non-negotiable for defense applications, requiring local knowledge bases and edge processing. The tightest constraint was balancing comprehensive guidance with the risk of providing incorrect life-critical information.

What's next for Simple

We'll expand beyond tech support to include medical aid (TCCC protocols), weapons systems, and communications troubleshooting. Integration of a local LLM will enable natural language understanding and context-aware responses. Full ATAK plugin deployment will make this available to soldiers in the field with complete offline functionality.
