Inspiration: We were inspired by the growing digital divide faced by seniors, especially in areas of social connection and emotional support. Many elderly individuals feel left out as technology evolves rapidly, and we wanted to create a platform that doesn’t just give them access to digital tools but does so in a way that feels warm, friendly, and approachable. Our vision was to build a single place where seniors can talk to an AI companion in their preferred language, explore hobbies, and share life moments with family, all while maintaining simplicity and accessibility. What it does: SilverSigma provides seniors with a personalized and inclusive experience to stay socially connected and mentally engaged. Users can interact with a conversational AI companion through voice or text, select from multiple languages including English, Malay, and Tamil, and easily adjust text sizes for better readability. The platform offers a hobby discovery hub where seniors can find activities like gardening or Tai Chi and connect with like-minded friends. They can also share stories, photos, and updates on a simple social feed designed with privacy and ease of use in mind.

How we built it: We built SilverSigma using Next.js for a performant, scalable frontend and TailwindCSS for a clean, responsive UI suitable for both desktop and mobile. Framer Motion was added for subtle animations to make the interface feel modern without overwhelming seniors. We integrated the HeyGen API for real-time avatar-based conversations, paired with the OpenAI API for natural language understanding and responses. Deployment was handled on Vercel, with environment variables securely managing API keys. The entire system was designed for modularity so new features and languages can be easily added in the future.

Challenges we ran into: Integrating real-time avatar streaming with HeyGen while ensuring low latency and stable connections was a major challenge, especially when testing across devices with different performance capabilities. Setting up multi-language support without complicating the UI required careful planning to keep the user experience simple. Deployment introduced additional complexity, as we encountered API key authentication issues on Vercel and had to configure environment variables correctly. We also faced difficulties ensuring the app remained fully responsive on both mobile and desktop while maintaining accessibility features like large fonts and clear icons.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: We’re proud that SilverSigma is a fully functional, deployed platform combining real-time AI avatar conversations, hobby discovery, and a simple social feed, all designed specifically for seniors. We successfully implemented multi-language support and customizable text sizes for accessibility, integrated multiple APIs for real-time interaction, and maintained a clean, modern design with subtle animations to make the experience feel lively yet easy to navigate. The fact that seniors can use the platform without technical assistance shows that we achieved our goal of simplicity and inclusivity.

What we learned: Throughout the development, we learned how to integrate multiple APIs seamlessly within one application, especially real-time systems like HeyGen’s avatar streaming alongside OpenAI’s language model. We also gained valuable experience in responsive design principles, ensuring the UI works across different devices while maintaining accessibility standards for elderly users. Debugging deployment issues on Vercel taught us how to manage environment variables securely and handle authentication for external services. Finally, we learned the importance of balancing technical complexity with user-friendliness, especially for a target audience less familiar with technology.

What's next for SilverSigma: Our next steps include expanding language options to cover more local dialects and exploring voice-controlled navigation, so seniors with limited mobility can interact without relying on touchscreens. We also want to introduce AI-powered hobby recommendations tailored to each user’s interests and integrate video calling features for connecting with family members. Partnering with senior centers and healthcare organizations will help us bring SilverSigma to real-world communities, ensuring the platform evolves based on feedback from the very people it aims to serve.
