INSPIRATION
Storytime was inspired by the timeless joy of bedtime storytelling and the need for a safe, accessible, and emotionally enriching alternative to screen-based entertainment. In many homes today, parents are busy, screens dominate, and stories that reflect diverse cultures and languages are missing. We wanted to reimagine storytime for today’s world, something functional, calm, and magical, designed with accessibility and inclusion at its core.
WHAT IT DOES
Storytime is a child-friendly audio storytelling platform built to deliver immersive, safe, and personalised storytelling experiences through beautifully narrated content in various modes and languages. It includes:
Two Story Modes: Plain (for calm listening) and Interactive (for engaging story moments). Voice Selection: Choose from warm AI or recorded narrators. Multi-language Support: English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, French, and more. Parental Dashboard: Manage filters, monitor activity, and control story types. Accessibility Features: Supports screen readers, large text, and offline mode. Offline Functionality: Download stories for travel or low-data areas
Storytime empowers children to experience storytelling their way, whether they need gentle bedtime audio, cultural representation, or voice-based learning tools.
HOW WE BUILT IT
We built Storytime with accessibility, scalability, and ease of use in mind:
Frontend: Developed using Flutter for seamless cross-platform performance on iOS and Android.
Backend: Powered by Firebase, with Firestore for story content, Auth for login, and Cloud Functions for scalability.
AI Voice Engine: Integrated custom text-to-speech APIs with human-like tuning and multilingual capabilities.
CMS: Created an internal tool for managing stories, themes, voice assignments, and moderation
Accessibility Considerations: Added semantic labelling, high-contrast options, and touch-friendly navigation.
Each component, from content upload to playback, was designed to serve children of different ages, learning styles, and abilities.

WHAT WE LEARNED
Accessibility must be proactive: Not an afterthought. Every story, button, and interaction was designed for universal usability. Voice matters: Tone, pacing, and emotion deeply affect children’s experience and trust. Simple functionality drives engagement: Parents need quick, safe options, and kids want intuitive fun. Cultural diversity is power: Kids light up when they hear stories in their voices and languages. Great storytelling doesn’t need screens: It needs care, calm, and connection.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR STORYTIME
Add more languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and Swahili. Launch a classroom edition for teachers with curated learning collections. Introduce AI-powered story builder tools for families to co-create and personalise stories for their kids based on their preferences. Partner with NGOs and schools to provide access in underserved communities. Explore emotion-based adaptive storytelling to adjust mood and narration pace
