Inspiration

I got frustrated with existing intimate wellness apps.

Some apps were clearly built in 2010 and haven't had a single update since. Some let you track your own periods but don't acknowledge the need to be aware of your partners' cycles to stay in the loop. Everything out there was either too clinical, reduced intimacy to basic checkboxes, or didn't appreciate how diverse modern relationships actually are. I wanted to build something that celebrates all forms of connection—from holding hands to passionate moments—whilst tracking health metrics, cycles for multiple partners, and giving you proper insights.

 What it does

Silk is an intimate wellness tracker that helps people understand their relationships and health. You can log different types of intimate moments (not just physical—cuddles and deep conversations count too), track health metrics like protection usage and STI tests, monitor your own cycle and your partners' cycles to stay supportive, and discover patterns through intelligent insights.

The app includes a calculator disguise with PIN protection for privacy, syncs with Apple Health for comprehensive wellness data, and provides home widgets for quick access. Every interaction feels smooth and intentional, with insights that help you understand connections between intimacy, mood, cycles, and overall wellness.

 How I built it

I built Silk natively for iOS using SwiftUI to keep everything fast and responsive. The app uses HealthKit for bidirectional health data sync (reading and writing cycle data, medications, etc.), implements on-device encryption, and uses Swift Data for local storage. I designed a custom calculator disguise interface, created data visualisation components for insights and correlations, and built a cycle prediction engine that works entirely on-device. The app includes home widgets using WidgetKit, advanced statistics dashboards, and pattern recognition algorithms—all whilst keeping everything local and private.

 Challenges I ran into

The biggest technical challenge was maintaining a reliable source of truth when sharing data bidirectionally with HealthKit whilst running cycle predictions and generating insights on the app side. Keeping everything in sync without conflicts or data loss was tricky, especially when users modify data in both places. Making the interface feel celebratory instead of clinical took several design iterations—intimacy apps usually feel either too sterile or weirdly playful. Building the cycle prediction algorithms without any cloud processing meant optimising heavily for on-device performance.

Honestly, the only thing that wasn't a challenge was integrating payments via RevenueCat—that part was surprisingly smooth.

 Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I built an app that tracks way more than just physical intimacy—it celebrates emotional connection too. The partner cycle tracking feature is something I haven't seen anywhere else, and it genuinely helps people stay supportive of their partners. I created an insights engine that finds meaningful patterns between intimacy, cycles, mood, and health using only on-device processing. The calculator disguise is both functional and discreet. Most importantly, I've had messages from users saying Silk helped them understand their bodies, improve communication with partners, and feel more connected, which honestly makes all the work worth it.

 What I learnt

Building health apps requires thinking about data synchronisation way more carefully than I expected—HealthKit integration is powerful but complex. I learnt that intimate wellness encompasses way more than physical acts; emotional connection, communication patterns, and understanding your partners' cycles all matter. Talking to users taught me that people want tools that celebrate their choices and help them be better partners, not prescribe how they should live. The technical challenges of cycle prediction and pattern recognition on-device pushed me to learn optimisation techniques I wouldn't have explored otherwise.

 What's next for Silk

I'm working on expanding insights with more sophisticated pattern recognition—finding correlations between intimacy frequency, cycle phases, mood patterns, and relationship satisfaction. Partner notifications are coming so you can get reminders about your partner's cycle phases or important dates. Long-term, I want Silk to become the comprehensive wellness companion that helps people understand themselves and be better partners.
