Inspiration
Many everyday health changes such as fatigue, headaches, sleep changes, appetite changes, and stress can be easy to ignore or forget. We wanted to create a simple tool that helps people notice these changes over time instead of relying only on memory.
This led us to build Silent Symptoms — a lightweight symptom observation and tracking web application focused on awareness, recurring patterns, and general care guidance.
What the Project Does
Silent Symptoms allows users to record an observation by selecting a symptom, intensity, duration, and optional notes.
The application then:
- Adds the observation to a personal timeline
- Stores the data locally in the browser
- Updates a dashboard with observation statistics
- Identifies symptoms that appear repeatedly
- Shows general care guidance based on the latest observation
- Highlights recurring or persistent signals that may deserve further attention
The goal is not to diagnose a condition, but to help users become more aware of changes in their own timeline.
How We Built It
We built the project as a lightweight client-side web application using:
- HTML5 for the structure
- CSS3 for the interface and visual design
- JavaScript for the application logic
- LocalStorage for storing observations directly in the user's browser
The application does not require a backend, account, or external database, making the prototype simple to run and easy to demonstrate.
What We Learned
While building Silent Symptoms, we learned how different parts of a web application work together.
We worked with:
- DOM manipulation
- JavaScript event handling
- LocalStorage
- Dynamic rendering of timeline entries
- Data filtering and counting
- Conditional UI updates
- Creating a responsive and user-friendly interface
- Deploying a static web application using GitHub Pages
We also learned that healthcare-focused applications need to clearly distinguish between general wellness guidance and medical diagnosis.
Challenges We Faced
One of the main challenges was designing the application so that it could provide useful guidance without making medical diagnoses or recommending medication.
Another challenge was creating a useful pattern-tracking system with a simple interface. Instead of overwhelming users with complicated medical information, we focused on making observations easy to record and understand.
We also had to make sure that observations remained available after refreshing the page, which led us to implement browser-based LocalStorage.
Future Improvements
There are several features we would like to add in future versions:
- More advanced trend and pattern visualization
- Charts showing changes over time
- Optional export of observation history
- More detailed pattern analysis
- Accessibility improvements
- Optional secure cloud synchronization
- A mobile application version
- More personalized, evidence-based wellness guidance
Important Disclaimer
Silent Symptoms is an observation and wellness-support tool. It does not diagnose diseases, provide medical diagnoses, or replace professional medical advice.
If a health concern persists, worsens, or significantly affects daily life, users should consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Conclusion
Silent Symptoms started as a simple idea: small changes are easier to understand when they are noticed and recorded over time.
By combining simple symptom tracking, timeline visualization, recurring-signal detection, and general care guidance, we aim to make everyday health observations easier to notice and understand.
