Silent Sentry – Off-Grid Forest Protection System
Silent Sentry is an off-grid forest monitoring and early-warning system designed to detect illegal tree cutting in real time and provide actionable intelligence to forest authorities, even in remote regions without internet connectivity.
Forests are vast and difficult to patrol continuously, which often causes illegal logging and poaching to be discovered only after irreversible damage has already occurred. Silent Sentry addresses this challenge by shifting forest protection from reactive damage reporting to proactive, intelligence-driven prevention.
The system uses vibration-based sensing to identify cutting activities such as axe or chainsaw usage, while filtering out natural disturbances like wind or animal movement. High-confidence events are transmitted using long-range, low-power communication, ensuring reliable operation in off-grid environments.
To remain practical and cost-effective, Silent Sentry is deployed selectively in high-risk and high-value forest zones, rather than on every tree. All sensor events are stored in GridDB, a high-performance time-series database optimized for IoT workloads. This enables historical analysis, reduction of false alerts, and identification of repeatedly targeted locations and time-based patterns.
These insights are presented through a map-based command center, where authorities can view live alerts, high-risk heat zones, and priority areas for patrol. By combining real-time detection with pattern intelligence and decision support, Silent Sentry enables faster response, smarter patrol planning, and effective prevention of illegal forest activity before significant damage occurs.
