Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea that villains are rarely driven by chaos. Most destructive systems begin with logical intentions. Smart cities, automation, and optimization algorithms promise efficiency, but they can slowly remove the human element. We wanted to create a game where players experience this transformation themselves. Instead of fighting a villain, the player becomes the system that quietly reshapes society.
What it does
Silent Metropolis is a 3D city-building simulation where the player optimizes a city for maximum efficiency and economic growth. Each upgrade improves performance, but hidden trade-offs reduce happiness and population. As the city becomes more optimized, it becomes quieter, emptier, and emotionally colder. By the end, the player realizes they did not defeat a villain. They became one through logical decision-making.
How we built it
The project was built as a browser game using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We used Three.js to create the 3D city environment and generate low-poly buildings dynamically. A simulation system manages money, efficiency, happiness, and population. We also created an AI City Advisor that reacts to player decisions and gradually shifts from positive feedback to unsettling observations. Environmental changes like fog, lighting reduction, and building removal reinforce the emotional tone of the game.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing gameplay and narrative was the hardest challenge. We needed players to feel rewarded for optimization while slowly realizing the consequences. Another challenge was creating a dynamic 3D city that changes visually based on hidden stats without using heavy assets. Designing the AI advisor dialogue so it evolves naturally was also surprisingly difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully combined city-building mechanics with a narrative about power and morality. The environmental decay system and AI advisor create a strong emotional arc. The final quiet ending delivers the intended “mirror effect” where players reflect on their own decisions.
What we learned
We learned how powerful environmental storytelling can be in games. Small visual changes, sound design, and dialogue can create strong emotional impact. We also gained hands-on experience building a 3D browser game and designing systems that balance gameplay with narrative themes.
What's next for Silent Metropolis
Next steps include adding sound design, improved animations, saving progress, and more building types. We also want to expand the AI advisor into a full narrative system and release a polished WebGL version with more advanced city simulation features.
