Silence SOS – A Silent Emergency Alert System

Inspiration

The idea for Silence SOS came from a simple question:

What if someone is in danger but cannot make a call for help?

Many people, especially women, children and senior citizens, may not be able to call someone during an emergency. They need a way to alert their trusted contacts without attracting attention.

This inspired me to create Silence SOS, a mobile application that silently sends emergency messages and location details to predefined contacts with a single action.

What It Does

Silence SOS:

  • Sends an SOS message to emergency contacts.
  • Shares the user's current location through a Google Maps link.
  • Works quickly with minimal interaction.
  • Includes a hidden interface, such as a fake calculator screen, to keep the app discreet.
  • Helps users seek assistance even when they cannot make a phone call.

How I Built It

I developed the project using:

Flutter for mobile app development. Dart as the programming language. Location services to obtain GPS coordinates. SMS functionality to send emergency messages. Android permissions for SMS and location access.

The message sent looks like:

"I need help. This is my current location: https://maps.google.com/?q=latitude,longitude"

Challenges I Faced

  1. Background SMS Issues

I faced several errors while integrating the SMS plugin in Flutter. Different plugin versions caused dependency and compatibility issues.

  1. Android Permissions

Managing runtime permissions for SMS and location access was challenging because Android has strict security requirements.

  1. Linking Screens

I encountered errors while connecting different screens, especially while implementing the fake calculator interface and navigation.

  1. Package Errors

I had to resolve issues such as:

  • Undefined imports
  • Missing packages
  • Incorrect method arguments
  • Gradle and Android configuration errors

Debugging these issues taught me a lot about Flutter's project structure and dependency management.

What I Learned

This project helped me learn:

  • Flutter application architecture.
  • Managing Android permissions.
  • Working with location APIs and SMS services.
  • Debugging package and dependency issues.
  • Building applications that solve real-world problems.

Most importantly, I learned that technology can be used to create solutions that may genuinely help someone in an emergency.

Future Improvements

In future versions, I would like to add:

  • Automatic audio recording during emergencies.
  • Internet-based alerts when SMS is unavailable.
  • Real-time location tracking.
  • Better emergency contact management.
  • Integration with police or emergency services.
  • Cloud backup and notifications.

Conclusion

Silence SOS is more than just a mobile application; it is an attempt to use technology for personal safety. This project challenged me technically, improved my problem-solving skills and showed me how software can make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
