Inspiration
I am from Nepal. In my country, many kids in far-flung villages like dolpa,humla and mustang where transport doesn't reach,internet doesn't work,and schools are very far from there place. They want to study but education cannot reach to them. I want to bring education to them and make them educated.
What it does
Sikho Nepal is a free learning app for village kids:
- Works fully offline, no internet needed
- All lessons in Nepali language, simple words
- Small video, audio and picture lessons for Class 1 to 8
- Works on low-cost phones, uses very less battery and storage
- Teacher can download lessons once in town, and kids can learn for months in village
How we built it
We designed it as a simple, offline-first app idea. Lessons are made for low network and low phone storage. We used simple design with big buttons, pictures and Nepali voice so even a small kid who cannot read English can use it alone or even uneducated parents can taught there children.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was making learning work without internet, without transport, and without costly phones. We solved it by keeping everything offline, small in size, and in Nepali.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we made a full idea for Nepal's far-flung villages like Dolpa, Humla and Mustang, where transport doesn't reach and internet doesn't work.
We made learning simple - fully offline, in Nepali language, for Class 1 to 8, and working on low-cost phones. Even a small kid who cannot read English can use it alone.
As a 1st sem student, I am proud that I thought of a real problem from my own country and made a solution for it.
What we learned
We learned that in Nepal, the biggest problem is not that kids don't want to learn, but that learning cannot reach far-flung villages where transport doesn't reach and internet doesn't work.
We learned how to think for low-cost phones, low battery, and offline use. And we learned that if we make something in simple Nepali with pictures and voice, even a small kid can learn alone without a teacher.
We also learned how to make an idea into a full project - from problem to solution.
What's next for Sikho nepal
Next, we want to add Math, Science and English lessons in Nepali, add offline tests, and work with village teachers in Nepal to make it free for all kids.
