Inspiration The project was born from a desire to bridge the gap between the Sikh diaspora's rich heritage and the modern tech landscape. We wanted to create a professional sanctuary—a "Digital Darbar"—that replaces the cold, corporate feel of traditional networking with an aesthetic inspired by modern Gurdwara architecture and minimalistic design.
What it does The platform serves as a professional hub for the global Sangat, enabling:
Career Seva: High-impact mentorship where experienced professionals offer selfless service to students and peers.
Talent Sangat: A trusted pipeline for hiring and professional networking within the community.
Venture Vichar: A dedicated space for founders and creators to receive honest, constructive feedback on their projects and startups.
How we built it The frontend was developed using React. The backend utilizes Supabase for real-time data management, while the design language was crafted using LaTeX for documentation and a custom CSS framework to achieve the "Minimalistic x Gurdwara" look.
Challenges we ran into The primary technical hurdle was implementing the "Curves and Straight Lines" aesthetic—specifically rendering dot-matrix typography alongside organic arch geometries in a way that felt cohesive. We also navigated the complexities of building a community-first platform while maintaining the high-performance standards expected of a modern professional tool.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully blending the industrial, minimalistic design with traditional spiritual motifs.
Engaging with members of the Sikh Student Association (SSA) at Purdue to ensure the platform's features align with the actual needs of student leaders and young professionals.
Creating a "Venture Vichar" system that encourages intellectual exchange and community growth.
What we learned We learned that professional utility is most effective when it is culturally resonant. By centering the UI around concepts like Seva and Sangat, we discovered that users are more likely to engage in deeper, more meaningful professional exchanges than they would on generic platforms.
What's next for Sikh Linkedin The next phase involves scaling the platform to the wider global diaspora and implementing a robust server monitoring stack—utilizing Docker, Grafana, and Prometheus—to ensure 100% uptime for our users. We also plan to integrate AI-driven career path mapping to help students navigate the transition from university to industry.
