Inspiration

We were inspired by the everyday communication barriers faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing teenagers and young adults. In situations where an interpreter is unavailable—like ordering at a restaurant, asking a store employee for help, or checking into an appointment—current solutions are frustratingly slow. Passing a phone back and forth to type messages is tedious. We wanted to give users independence, speed, portability, and the ability to participate seamlessly and directly in conversations.

What it does

SignSync is a pair of smart gloves that enables true bidirectional communication between ASL users and hearing individuals who do not know ASL. First, the glove recognizes ASL signs and translates them into spoken language in real-time. Then, when the hearing person replies, the system converts their speech into text and displays it on a screen directly attached to the Deaf user's glove. It is designed to make these everyday, short interactions up to 2.5 times faster than typing.
