About the Project — Sign Speak

I created Sign Speak because communication should be accessible to everyone. Deaf and hard-of-hearing people may face communication barriers in everyday situations, and I wanted to build a website that could help make communication and learning sign language easier.

My goal was not only to create a sign language translator, but also to build a platform where people could learn, find useful resources, and feel connected to a community.

Sign Speak includes several features:

  • Sign Recognition: Users can use their camera to recognize signs and translate them into text, which can be spoken aloud, copied, or saved as a TXT file.
  • Word Examples: Users can type a word to see an example sign or upload a file containing an example.
  • Sign Language Alphabet: Users can enter their names and see how to represent each letter using signs.
  • 120 Basic Words: The website contains 120 basic words organized into 11 categories, with links to Signing Savvy for additional learning resources.
  • Community: A collection of links to organizations and resources that support Deaf communities around the world.

I built Sign Speak as a website with separate pages for its main features. I worked on the interface, navigation, and functionality to make the platform simple to explore.

I focused on combining sign recognition with practical tools such as text-to-speech, copying and saving recognized text, and learning resources. I also added an alphabet section and a collection of basic signs to make the website useful beyond translation.

One of the biggest challenges was bringing different features together into one website while keeping the interface easy to use. Sign language recognition is also a complex task because signs can depend on hand movements, position, and context.

Another challenge was making the platform useful for both communication and learning, rather than focusing on only one feature. I had to think about how users could interact with the website and access its different tools without unnecessary complexity

While working on Sign Speak, I learned more about web development, user interface design, and the importance of accessibility in technology. I also learned that building a useful project involves more than writing code: it requires understanding users' needs and thinking about how technology can solve real problems.

In the future, I would like to improve sign recognition accuracy, support more signs and sign languages, and make the platform more accessible on different devices.

My vision is for Sign Speak to become a helpful tool that brings people closer together through communication, learning, and understanding.
