Bridging Communication Gaps with Mixed Reality Sign Language Assistance

Inspiration

The idea for this project was born out of the daily struggles faced by deaf individuals and those who communicate with them. Imagine a parent unable to express love to their deaf child or a worker on a loud construction site struggling to convey critical messages. These barriers inspired us to create a solution that makes sign language learning and real-time assistance more accessible, engaging, and seamless.

What We Learned

Throughout this journey, we gained insights into:

  • The challenges deaf individuals face in communication and accessibility.
  • The limitations of existing sign language solutions, which often lack real-time interaction and engagement.
  • The potential of mixed reality and wearable tech to transform how people learn and use sign language.

How We Built the Project

  • Nwalahnjie coded a mixed reality experience that immerses users in sign language learning and translation.
  • Kevin researched user needs and designed the UI of the experience, then adapted the solution for various settings, helping shortlist the right features and design the pitch deck.

Challenges Faced

  • Technical Limitations – Creating an intuitive and responsive mixed reality experience required overcoming hardware constraints.
  • User Adoption – Encouraging non-signers to use the technology and adopt sign language as a communication tool.

The Future

We aim to expand the solution to smart glasses and mobile devices, making real-time sign language assistance a reality for millions. By bridging communication gaps, we aim to create a world where language is no longer a barrier but a bridge.
