Inspiration: While visiting a school for deaf children, I met orphans who were incredibly kind and eager to learn—even without access to proper education. They couldn’t hear, but they expressed so much with their hands and eyes. That moment inspired me to build something just for them. I created SignEdu to make sure every child, no matter their hearing ability or background, can learn essential life skills in a way that speaks their language.
What it does: SignEdu is a web app that teaches hard-of-hearing kids aged 5–7 about:
🚦 Road safety
🧸 Good touch vs. bad touch
😊 Emotional awareness
It does this using animated rhymes synced with sign language images, turning important safety and self-awareness lessons into fun, visual, and memorable experiences.
How we built it: Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Backend: python + MySQL
Created a user-friendly login and signup system
Designed and integrated sign language visuals with custom rhymes
Built for low-resource environments so it’s accessible in orphanages or schools with limited internet
Challenges we ran into: Finding or creating child-appropriate sign language visuals
Writing rhymes that are simple, safe, and engaging
Designing a clean, accessible UI for very young users
Managing backend login/signup securely with lightweight tools
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Successfully merged education with accessibility, something most learning platforms don’t do
Created custom educational rhymes that are not just fun but also life-saving
Designed an interface that works for pre-literate children with hearing loss
Built an app from scratch that could genuinely be used in real-world deaf schools or orphanages
What we learned: Accessibility-first design is powerful—when you truly think about the user, solutions become more meaningful
Teaching through rhymes and signs requires deep empathy and simplicity
You don’t need advanced tech to make an impact—HTML, CSS, JS, and care are enough to start
We also deepened our knowledge of user authentication, database handling, and frontend/backend sync
🔮 What's next for SignEdu: 📖 Add more rhymes covering hygiene, bullying, and kindness
🤖 Explore gesture recognition to make it more interactive
🌐 Translate the app into multiple regional sign languages
🏫 Partner with NGOs and deaf schools to test and deploy in real classrooms
SignEdu is just the beginning—because every child deserves to learn, stay safe, and be heard, even without sound.
