Inspiration
SignalSafe AI was inspired by a simple but serious problem: during floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and other emergencies, communication networks can fail exactly when people need help the most. We wanted to explore whether nearby smartphones could help people communicate even without internet or cellular connectivity.
How We Built It
We designed SignalSafe AI as a device-to-device emergency communication system using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct. Users can send SOS alerts, emergency messages, and location information through nearby devices. Firebase is used for cloud synchronization when connectivity is available, while offline functionality helps the system continue working during network outages. We also integrated AI to prioritize critical emergency requests.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned about offline-first application design, device-to-device communication, geolocation, emergency communication workflows, AI integration, and building systems that can switch between offline and online modes.
Challenges
The biggest challenges were designing reliable communication when there is no internet, handling device connectivity, reducing battery usage, and ensuring that emergency messages are delivered efficiently. We focused on keeping the interface simple because users may be stressed during an emergency.
SignalSafe AI aims to turn nearby devices into a resilient communication network when traditional networks fail.
