Inspiration

We wanted to make the ASL letter learning experience engaging, fun, and educational.

What it does

Uses hand gesture recognition to detect players' hands when signing ASL letters. The main goal is to have players be able to memorize the ASL letters in a fun and challenging way. As time goes on, the difficulty of the game increases requiring to use their ASL letter knowledge in a faster pace.

How we built it

We built this game using the Python programming language. We chose Pycharm as our IDE for this project. The main libraries we used were pygame as the game engine and mediapipe & cv2 for the ASL functionality.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we ran into was learning how pygame works as an engine, as well as implementing the logic for the hand detection of the game. We also ran into some merging conflicts while working with version control that took, which involved quick thinking to resolve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the amount of work that was done in the span of 24-hours. We are especially proud of implementing the hand detection for our game and how well the game visually looks.

What we learned

We learned that communicating to each other about what libraries to use for the project is crucial ensuring that the development goes a bit more smoothly. It allows everyone to be on the same page and makes the project's features functionally cohesive. We also learned a little bit of ASL in the process of making this game.

What's next for Sign of the Wild

Adding a customized learning system based on the players' learning needs, visual polishing, and more features towards gameplay.
