Inspiration
Our dream was to create an accessible space for 90 million deaf people. After encounters with many deaf people, we realized there was a tremendous need here, and then we started building the solution.
What it does
Video calls mediation for sign languages translation on-demand for the 90M deaf community
- Combination of tech & humanity of Sign language translation
- Accessible user experience for: old, blind, and more
- Deaf first: Everything the deaf is a need in one easy place
- 0 Bureaucracy & 'Free for the deaf' strategy
- Customized service with a specific interpreter on demand
How we built it
We started with a simple end2end matching system and then started to work on our video client, which is something we never did before. After searching the web for the best way to create it we decided to go with Twilio API. One after another, We added features the deaf community told us they needed: A simple one-click process to get Sign Language Interpreter, A chat, option for the interpreters to make phone calls from within the app! , LIVE TRANSCRIPT, Screen Sharing, and Scheduled translations. We decided to serve our app as a web app to allow users to access Sign Now from every device whether it is a mobile device, tablet, or personal computer. Using the firebase cloud services we are able to serve users around the globe with googles standards for cyber and data security, understand how our users use our app, and customize their experience for the best results. We took all the features from the meeting app for hearing people and optimized them for the best deaf experience like no company has done before.
Challenges we ran into
We have excellent momentum with the community of deaf and sign language interpreters who are interested in and use the app frequently. Our major challenge is cash flow and international connections mainly in Asia for the start of our penetration strategy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In the last two years, we have accessed many international events. Among them, the 2019 Eurovision song contest in Israel and the Euro final in soccer. Right now, we work with Google from San Fransisco to be our design partner for making this mission come true.
What we learned
We learned that the most important thing is a simple user experience. Many of the deaf community have low digital literacy, so we developed an app with minimal buttons and maximum experience.
What's next for Sign Now app-sign languages on demand for 90 million deaf
We are currently working to enter 75 paying customers in Israel by March 2022, and at the same time are preparing for the penetration strategy abroad with an emphasis on the Asian market that interests us for many reasons.
