What's next for SIGN LANGUAGE RECOGNITION USING CNN
Inspiration
The inspiration for this project came from the desire to leverage technology to bridge communication gaps for individuals who use sign language. Witnessing the challenges faced by the deaf and hard of hearing community in everyday communication motivated me to explore how convolutional neural networks (CNNs) could be applied to interpret sign language gestures.
What it does
This project utilizes CNNs to interpret sign language gestures in real-time. By analyzing input from video or image sources, the system can recognize hand movements and gestures associated with sign language and translate them into text and spoken language. This facilitates seamless communication between sign language users and those who may not understand sign language.
How I built it
I built the project using Python, TensorFlow, and NumPy. The core of the system is a CNN architecture trained on a dataset of sign language gestures. I preprocessed the data to extract meaningful features and trained the model to classify different gestures accurately. Real-time recognition was achieved by integrating the trained model with video or image input sources.
Challenges I ran into
One of the main challenges was acquiring and preprocessing a diverse dataset of sign language gestures. Ensuring the model's robustness and accuracy across various hand shapes, movements, and lighting conditions required extensive data collection and augmentation. Additionally, optimizing the model for real-time inference posed computational challenges that needed to be addressed.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud of developing a system that can accurately interpret sign language gestures in real-time. Overcoming the challenges associated with dataset collection, model training, and optimization has strengthened my understanding of deep learning and its applications in computer vision and accessibility.
What I learned
Through this project, I gained practical experience in implementing CNNs for image classification tasks and real-time inference. I learned about the complexities involved in preprocessing diverse datasets and optimizing models for performance and efficiency. Additionally, working on this project deepened my appreciation for the importance of accessibility in technology.
What's next for SIGN LANGUAGE RECOGNITION USING CNN
In the future, I plan to further enhance the system's accuracy and expand its vocabulary of recognized sign language gestures. I also aim to explore additional modalities, such as incorporating depth information from depth-sensing cameras, to improve recognition performance in varying environments. Additionally, I intend to collaborate with experts in sign language linguistics to ensure the system's compatibility with different sign language dialects and variations.
