Inspiration

My team and I were inspired to create a sign language to text translator because we wanted to make a positive impact on our society and make it more inclusive for people with disabilities. We were particularly drawn to the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community.

What it does

Our software uses computer vision and a web camera to recognize sign language and translate it into text. This can help to bridge the communication gap between deaf and hearing people, and make it easier for deaf people to participate in everyday activities.

How we built it

We developed our software using Python, OpenCV, TensorFlow, Teachable Machine, and GitHub. We used OpenCV for image processing and hand detection, TensorFlow for machine learning, Teachable Machine to create a custom sign language recognition model, and GitHub to manage our code and collaborate with each other.

Challenges we ran into

We faced several challenges during the development of our software. One of the biggest challenges was that two of our team members left the project early on. This meant that the remaining two of us had to take on more work and learn new skills quickly. However, we were determined to succeed and we were able to overcome these challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we were able to create a functional sign language to text translator. We are also proud of the fact that we were able to overcome the challenges we faced and complete the project on time.

What we learned

We learned a lot from this project. We learned about the importance of teamwork and communication. We also learned about the power of perseverance and the importance of not giving up on our goals.

What's next for Sign-ify

We are currently working on developing a front-end for our software and improving the accuracy of our sign language recognition algorithm. We are also exploring ways to make our software more accessible to people with disabilities. We are committed to making Sign-ify a valuable tool for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
