Inspiration
Communication is a basic human need, yet millions of people with hearing and speech impairments face challenges in everyday conversations. Whether in hospitals, schools, workplaces, or public services, communication barriers often limit accessibility and independence. We wanted to create a solution that uses Artificial Intelligence to bridge this gap and make communication more inclusive for everyone.
What it does
Sign Connect AI is an AI-powered communication platform that enables seamless interaction between sign language users and non-sign language users.
The platform can:
Convert sign language gestures into text. Convert sign language into speech. Convert spoken language into text. Support two-way communication between users. Improve accessibility in educational, healthcare, and public environments.
Our goal is to make communication faster, easier, and more inclusive.
How I built it
We built Sign Connect AI using a combination of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and Web Technologies.
Frontend: React Backend: Fast API (Python) Computer Vision: OpenCV and Media Pipe Machine Learning: TensorFlow Database: Firebase AI Services: Gemini API Speech Processing: Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech APIs
The camera captures hand gestures, which are processed using Computer Vision models. The recognized gestures are then translated into text and speech in real time.
Challenges I ran into
Collecting and understanding sign language gesture patterns. Achieving accurate gesture recognition under different lighting conditions. Reducing latency for real-time communication. Integrating multiple AI components into a single workflow. Ensuring accessibility and user-friendly design.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Developed a working AI-based sign language recognition system. Enabled real-time conversion of gestures into text and speech. Created an accessibility-focused solution with real-world impact. Built a scalable foundation that can support multiple languages in the future. Demonstrated how AI can be used for social good and inclusivity.
What I learned
Throughout this project, we learned: Practical implementation of Computer Vision using OpenCV and Media Pipe. Training and integrating Machine Learning models. Real-time AI application development. Team collaboration and rapid prototyping during hackathon development.
What's next for Sign Connect AI
Offline gesture recognition for low-connectivity areas. AI-powered sign language learning assistant. Emergency communication mode for hospitals and public services. Mobile application deployment for Android and iOS. Integration of a 3D sign language avatar for two-way communication.
