Inspiration
We were inspired because we know people who have suffered from blindness (are legally blind), and have hearing problems. We wanted to make a system that could help them, but was useless for them at the same time for fun.
What it does
The products made by Sight and Sound services cater to the deaf and blind. We made a way for the deaf to understand what other people say (takes speech to text, and text to morse code), and for the blind to say how far away objects are. However, the deaf product requires them to hear a buzzer, and the blind product requires them to see a liquid crystal display (LCD) to see the measurements of objects near them.
How we built it
We built the deaf aid product using an Arduino UNO R3, external 9V battery, power supply module, potentiometer, ultrasonic sensor, and LCD display, along with jumper wires to connect it all. We developed the software for this product using C in the Arduino IDE.
For our blind aid product, we used a Raspberry Pi 4, active buzzer, jumper wires, microphone, and Pi Sugar. We built code for it using Python in VS Code and uploaded it to the Raspberry Pi 4 using RealVNC. We also ssh'ed into the Raspberry Pi 4 in order to run some programs.
Challenges we ran into
We had lots of challenges with the hardware, as this was the first time we had implemented hardware in a hackathon. We also had trouble connecting to our Raspberry Pi using RealVNC, as it often disconnected and we were not able to gain access into it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our hardware integration as this was the first time we had used hardware as a hackathon, and we had limited hardware knowledge before this. We figured out things as we went along, learning lots yet making tons of mistakes as well. We are also proud of making a website to market our product successfully.
What we learned
We learned how to effectively integrate hardware with software to develop a tangible product that can be used in people's everyday life (well not really, since it is useless!). Along with that, we learned how to use an ultrasonic sensor and LCD display with an Arduino as well as connecting an external power source.
What's next for Sight and Sound Services (SSS)
Sight and Sound Services hopes to become more useless in the future. We hope to continue to make useless products for our users to wear and complain about that do not improve their quality of life or experiences at all!
