Inspiration

I've long played tower defense games, and have seen a recent increase for these type of games with some sort of twist. Seeing the flappingduck as an example where you can make your own map like mario builder gave me the idea to create a defender/attacker type of reverse-td game.

What it does

Siege of Snoo is a reverse tower defense game where:

  • You spawn units of bots, trolls, and other types of creeps to breach a fortress.
  • Each unit has strenghts and weaknesses, which you need to utilize against the towers defending the fortress.
  • You can switch routes to increase the size of the wave you are sending to overwhelm the towers defences.
  • An editor that lets players design maps with towers and publish them for others to attack. ## How we built it Using Devvit and Phaser, with some assistance from with CoPilot and Chatgpt ## Challenges we ran into
  • Creating game assests was much more time consuming than initially anticipated. Defining a style and staying consistent to it was a big struggle.
  • Balance: the idea is to create a type of puzzle game where you need to anticipate in advance what will happen with which units, creating a difference in units while still making them useful, balancing in general is very difficult. Giving towers enough capabilities but not making them impossible to pass or too week.
  • Creating assets, uploading them, testing, redoing, reuploading, testing, consumes a lot of time after a while. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
  • Didn't just make another TD, tried to flip it on it's head and made it feel like a different type of game. However still a bit of a button masher.
  • Got a working map editor that with fortress building constraints. ## What we learned Working on reddit interactive apps is actually very easy to get into. Will definitely spend more time working on different types of things. This was my first time using phaser, but will continue working with it. I'm more familiar with Three.js but wanted to utilize a game library. ## What's next for Siege of Snoo
  • Expand the editor with more fortress themes and towers. Tweak the towers so units can overwhelm them/damage them.
  • Add battle plans (global modifiers for spawns, tokens, or abilities), more of a preplanned attack strategy, where waves are considered in advance.
  • Improve social features: publishing, rating, and spotlighting fortresses.
  • Leaderboards and daily/weekly challenges once server validation is fully in place.
  • More abilities and formations to give attackers richer strategies.
  • Much better game assets.
