Inspiration
Many years ago, someone gave me a book called 2001 Things to Do Before You Die. It cracked open my world. Suddenly, I was doing things I’d never thought of, pushing past comfort zones, seeing new possibilities. But the format? A mess. Lose your place in the book, forget the page, no categories, no easy way to search for specific tasks. I always thought: this would work better as an app. Not just a checklist, but a living, playful world that dares you forward.
What it does
Sidequests transforms everyday life into a playful adventure. Instead of a boring checklist, you get curated quests, small, quirky challenges designed to spark momentum, kindness, and creativity, sprinkled with a little mischief.
You can choose from themed Challenge Packs like Kindness Conspiracy, City Explorer, Creative Chaos, and Weekend Warrior. Each quest as short as an hour or lasts for years. They are actionable and designed to push you just outside your comfort zone while keeping things fun.
The app combines clear instructions and commentary so each quest feels complete and meaningful. It’s not about grinding points, it’s about building stories, adding kindness into the world, and making daily life feel a little more adventurous.
How we built it
We combined Notion’s clean design, Duolingo’s quirky feedback loops, and the witty dialogue of Wednesday Addams (but with more optimism). Add music, animations, and a manifesto, and the app feels like stepping into a curious world.
Technically, Sidequests was built in Flutter, Dart, animations, and SQLite for an offline-first experience. The buttons produce tactile feedback to make the app feel reactive. RevenueCat handles subscriptions, and everything is stitched together with a focus on vibe over complexity.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part wasn’t the code, it was cohesion. Balancing tone so it’s witty but welcoming. Making the music, copy, and animations feel like one world. Fighting scope creep (one more quest pack, one more feature). Shipping an experience, not just a feature list.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
Built a gamified habit app that actually feels fun, not punishing.
Created 400+ quests across fitness, kindness, creativity, and exploration.
Shaped a brand voice and manifesto that invite people to be playful and weird.
Designed an experience that makes small wins feel like big progress.
What we learned
Play beats pressure. People return to fun, not guilt.
Tone is everything. Snarky, quirky copy makes tasks feel like dares.
Kindness scales. Users love quests that add positivity to the world.
Shipping is art. The hardest problems are creative, not technical.
What’s next for SideQuests HQ
We want to grow a community of adventurers, a guild where people share quests, cheer each other on, and swap creative ways to complete challenges. Sidequests HQ isn’t just an app; it’s the start of a movement that makes life a little more playful, kind, and connected.
One line: Sidequests is here to prove that life is more fun when you play it.
