Inspiration

Sidekick was inspired by the idea of having an everyday program that we can comfortably use and trust. We wanted to make something that could help with the small tasks we do every day and make them easier.

What it does

Sidekick helps us keep track of tasks we need to complete and set up workspaces for different subjects. A workspace acts like a shortcut that opens everything we need. For example, a “Homework” workspace could open Canvas and other helpful resources with one simple command.

How we built it

We built Sidekick in Python using Gemini and function calling, which lets it respond to requests and perform actions through the app. We used the RapidFuzz library to find files and folders by similar names, even when the search isn’t an exact match. The database was created using SQlite. We also used libraries to build the interface; store approved apps and workspaces and connect the different features. Codex helped us fix errors and implement features along the way.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into countless errors, and some of our functions did not work properly at first. Having little Python experience was also a challenge, so we had to learn as we went and keep trying different solutions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to see our vision come true one step at a time. Sidekick is working how we imagined and is working properly. We can't wait to continue working on this project even after this amazing hackathon.

What we learned

We learned that through trial and error, a lot can be accomplished even if it takes many hours of testing and fixing errors. Our team kept working together until Sidekick could do what we wanted it to do, and we learned a lot about Python and building a project along the way.

What's next for Sidekick

We would like to keep working on Sidekick and make it even better. I would want to implement it into my daily life and use it almost every day. Working on it little by little will also help me keep learning and improving my skills.
