Inspiration
Our journey began with a simple idea: how can we make travel more spontaneous and exciting? Inspired by the concept of a "side quest" in video games—those unexpected detours that lead to unique experiences—we envisioned an app that could bring this sense of adventure to real-life travel. We wanted to create an application that not only provided location-based recommendations, but also surprised users with suggestions they might never have considered. Thus, Sidequest was born.
What it does
Side Quest semi-randomly serves locations and activities nearby its users, providing them with a “Side Quest” to visit these hidden gems or holes in the wall.
How we built it
The development of Side quest involved a combination of front-end and back-end technologies. On the front end, we used Figma to design our website and then HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the user interface. We designed interactive elements like buttons and input fields to allow users to select the type of location they wanted to explore.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major challenges we encountered was backend coding. Integrating the API and ensuring that the data was processed correctly required a deep understanding of asynchronous programming and debugging. We ended up not having enough time to fully finish the backend coding due to our prior focus on slides and the frontend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is the first hackathon we have participated in, and we are proud to have been able to complete and submit a project making the most of our abilities and strengths.
What we learned
We learned how to effectively use Figma in development, UI/UX, and website design. Additionally, we polished our skills with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This hackathon challenged us to code and build a program in a limited time-frame, reinforcing the skills we have learned before in an entirely new format.
What's next for Side Quest
As we move forward, our primary focus is on finishing up the backend code. This involves refining the API integration, optimizing the handling of real-time data, and ensuring that the app can efficiently process and deliver location recommendations. We're also working on enhancing the user experience by fine-tuning the app's performance and adding more robust features.
