Si Se Puede

Inspiration

We were inspired to create this project because all of us are first-generation Americans and we acknowledged the variety of experiences we had growing up. We wanted to tell a story about a girl experiencing life in the States and how it differs from her perspective of daily life through her adolescence. There are challenges that come with having two identities, your nationality and your ethnic background.

What it does

This is an interactive storybook that is supposed to emulate a movie with three acts. The three acts show different stages of the girl's life and how her background affected her experience. As you transition through the acts, the colors and level of detail of the drawings vary as you go through her life.

How we built it

We started to design this project in Figma as we wanted to plan our scenes. This helped us to create the story of the girl and plan out what we needed to draw (every drawing was hand-drawn). We then used React to create the animations and develop user interactions with the storybook.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges we ran into was issues with formatting of css files. We wanted to make sure that elements stayed in one spot on the page when the browser gets minimized. We did our best to manipulate the elements and make the project run smoothly.

Also, there was some difficulty with finishing all the art due to time-constraints as everything was being drawn by the group. This prevented us from showing more of the character's experience and life. So, we decided to keep the most significant events of her life which shows her experiences.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some of the members never used Figma and have never used React. This project helped us get exposed to front-end development. As well as creating a project within a short deadline.

What we learned

We learned a lot about front-end development in React and learned how to integrate hand drawn images into react animations.

What's next for Si se puede

We plan on continuing the project and adding more life events that played a role in the girl's view of the world and success as a daughter of immigrants. There is so much that people experience in life and we want to include these to showcase a better understanding of how life is for children of immigrants.
