Inspirations

Our team was inspired by a shared passion for language, learning, and XR. The idea for Shufa emerged from our interest in calligraphy, aiming to make it more accessible and more compelling as well as share cultures.

What it does

Shufa transforms your home into a virtual calligraphy studio, using XR and the Logitech MX Ink Pen to simulate authentic brush strokes. It provides guided lessons, starting with Chinese calligraphy, with the character for "Dragon" (龙).

How we built it

We used the Meta Presence platform for Unity, focusing first on simulating the brush and paper interaction. The team collaborated closely, with Echo and Dorothea handling 3D and 2D design respectively, while Mark and Pablo ensured the technical and production aspects were aligned.

Challenges we ran into

Simulating the physics of a calligraphy brush and populating the VR environment within the limited time of a hackathon were major challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created an immersive, culturally rich experience that blends traditional art with modern technology and brought together a team of diverse skills to achieve a common goal.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of XR development, fast iteration, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

What's next for Shufa

We plan to expand Shufa to include other scripts like Arabic, Persian, Gothic, and more, offering various styles and levels of difficulty as extension packs, making Shufa a versatile tool for learning global calligraphy.
