Inspiration Angel has autism and one of her fixations is mushrooms, so we used that fixation and the theme of connection to design shroom hunt. We chose mushrooms because they are the epitome of connection. Mushrooms grow from a series of fungal threads called mycelium which grows underground or in rotting tree trunks. Mycelium are a superhighway of information transfer and nutrient transfer. They connect to other mycelium to share information about nutrient sources and help release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere through the decomposition process. This superhighway relates to connection as it acts how our nervous system acts, shares information how we share information, and grow how we grow with education.

What it does Shroom hunt allows the user to collect 3 different types of mushrooms that spawn into the space and, when collected, a UI element pops up with information about that mushroom. We also created a snap lens that allows you to tap and spawn in a mushroom at the location that you tapped.

How we built it Using 8th Wall we used the built in hand tracking API and unique scripts to create the functionality including color transitioning selection tool, icons that show the mushroom options, moving shrooms, and the ability to collect mushrooms. The mushrooms were created using blender and shader nodes to create texture and the polka dot pattern. The snap lens was created with a simple world map and the created blender assets.

Challenges we ran into We had issues with exporting out of blender and the resulting image would be a white cone or a white stem before we got the advice and recommendation to bake the textures on before exporting. We also had challenges with the available in 8th Wall not being able to support hand tracking and webXR at the same time leading us to change the scope of the project and have to do the project a different way. For the snap lens we couldn't figure out how to cycle through multiple models.

Accomplishments that we're proud of Our project as a whole, our adaptability, and the way that the mushrooms look and move in 8th wall.

What we learned We learned more about Java Script and how to program using 8th Wall and the capabilities of each. We also learned some blender basics, having not used blender much, we improved our communication skills within a team, and our delegation skills.

What's next for Shroom Hunt To fit the theme of connection in a more literal and less hypothetical sense, shroom hunt's next steps are to become a multiplayer experience where you compete to the first 10 total mushrooms, and/or compete to the first 10 mushrooms of a single type. We also want to create a count next to the icons for that specific type of mushroom and a total counter on the right side of the screen. Additionally, we plan to add more mushroom types and a UI information popup on each mushroom. For the snap lens we plan to figure out how to cycle through multiple models.
