Web, Mobile App, or Something Else?
Straw.H is a mobile application developed using the Xamarian framework which allows compatibility with both Android and IOS.
Executive Summary
Straw.H is a mobile application that allows the collection of data through the day to day of farmers working on the field by keeping track of their hourly schedule without much interference of the farmers day to day basis. Straw.H looks to gather this data by keeping track of the hours that farmers are working by scanning their hats using embedded NFC chips during designated work hours and breaks. By doing so, Straw.H looks to standardize and automate the process of record keeping and creating a safer environment for farmers in the United States.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would benefit thanks to Straw.H's functionality to provide data that would help the organization model a more accurate relationship between weather temperature and humidity, physical exhaustion, and related health problems.
Thanks to the farms collecting data and having better tools to manage their workforce, farm owners could potentially reduce their fines. For example, placing the scanning stations at ideally located in places where there is shade and water available could dramatically reduce incidents in which farmers do not take the necessary breaks or drink enough water. : Most importantly, the collection of this data will benefit farmers in the long run by making their work environment safer with more trained workers and farm owners. In the long run Straw.H hopes to demonstrate the importance of taking breaks and hydrating by alerting both the farmer and the crew leader when the farmer needs take a break to reduce the risk of prolonged exposure that high temperature and heath exhaustion can have on the farmer's health.
Design/Features
Projected Challenges
- Maintenance for the hardware would fall under the care of the farm owners. -There would have to be some existing network infrastructure in place around the area being used.
Deliverables
The task will be divided among the five members of the team. Each developer will be working in a crucial part of the app.
Genesis Alvarez will be in charge of the hardware aspect of the application. Her role will be simulating the hardware and the data the application would receive in a live environment.
Ignacio Lopez will be in charge of the design and implementation of the database. This will receive and store the data from the Straw Hats. Afterwards, Ignacio will also work as a floater between back-end and front-end development to help with the integration of the database.
The front-end development will be spearheaded by Linnette Martinez. She will be in charge of the UI, working with making the user experience a simple yet effective.
Julian Duque will be in command of the development of the back-end of the app. This handles the way the data is manipulated for receiving, storing, accessing and sending to the server side.
Sergio Perez will be working as a developer in the front-end and back-end with most of the time devoted to the latest. He will be rigid by the same timelines of the front and back end parts.
