Inspiration
We wanted to make a good environmental impact with the skills we had. We care most about water usage since it is an issue that can be easily fixed. Everyone only needs to make a small change in their lives in order to make a big difference together. We thought this was a good accessible idea and so we got to work on creating this program.
What it does
The Shower Timer is an application where the user sets a timer, which begins counting down. Users are encouraged to finish showering before the timer ends, because Tony the water droplet will start freaking out! Tony keeps count of how many liters you have used while in the shower in order to show u the facts and possibly guilt trip you.
How we built it
We, the fabulous devs, split the project into two parts. One of us animated Tony while the other coded the program. We used Unity and Krita to compile the data needed to form this program.
Challenges we ran into
A few challenges we ran into was the timer not working properly and the animations not syncing. It was also the first time we've animated anything, so when one of us ran into problems, neither of us knew how to solve it at first. Eventually, Google solved the problem. Our most daunting challenge was finishing everything by the timeline and making sure we had enough time to make our pitch. Our screen recorder did not pick up one of our voices and so we had to re-record.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first Collab and it actually works! The animations worked out well and although we didn't have time to implement the rest of our animations, we're still happy with the final result. The timer and Liter-Counter(tm) works as expected and we are glad it does.
What we learned
We learned how to time manage and work extremely efficiently. We also learned a TON of stuff from the workshops like how to make a discord bot and how to use Unity. Animation was also another thing we learned.
What's next for Shower Timer with Tony
In the future we would like to add more animations and a points/levelling/xp system to gamify the program. Once we add a levelling system, users from all around the world can compare how much water they've used and how they can do better!
