Inspiration
You often find that disabled individuals enjoy games less than majority of the population. This has to do with the fact that many games and controllers are catered towards those who are abled. Therefore, it was decided that we would create an accessible controller and a game that include the visually and physically impaired.
What it does
Showdown is an easy and addicting retro arcade game. It allows for a nostalgic theme with an updated, more exclusive controller. Instead of a joystick that is stiff and fatiguing to use, our wheel design incorporates large convenient buttons to avoid fine motor movements, actions that are difficult for disabled individuals.
How we built it
Unity and Github were the programs we used for the creation of Showdown. We split the tasks by creating separate branches where we would build different mechanics of the game. These branches were then merged into one. For the controller, our lack of materials led us to visualize our idea by 3D modeling the device.
Challenges we ran into
Prior to the hackathon we had little to no experience with Unity. This caused us to run into many problems even the basic ones. The greatest challenge was learning how to transfer our thoughts onto Unity's platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our game is fully functional and much more than expected from ourselves. We hold great pride in the creation of this application as it's design and mechanics stick to our original ideas.
What we learned
Through this hackathon we have become familiar with Unity's functionality with 2D games. We were also able to use Github in order to work on the project at the same time.
What's next for Showdown
Moving forward we hope to release Showdown with the accessible controller.
