Inspiration

College applications are very one sided. Most colleges don't ever get to know you as a person, but rather a faceless GPA and SAT score. We wanted to change this entirely, by creating a website where you can express your true self to colleges. Showcase is an online platform for high school students to create a 360 degree portfolio about themselves that highlights their unique talents, skills, interests, hobbies, and accomplishments to prospective universities, employers, or internships. Students can also promote their friends, share blog articles and projects, and create a community that helps each and everyone reach their fullest potential. With Showcase, colleges can see you as you. So join us and together let’s showcase our story!

What it does

Showcase is, in essence, a social media platform to share your unique lifestyle and experiences with colleges. You can do that by creating a portfolio to showcase skills, talents and accomplishments as well as something more personal, such as hobbies, friend groups, and sports teams. You can also upload quotes, facts about yourself and even college essays. Anything you think colleges need to see you in your entirety.

How we built it

We used HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to carefully carve the layout of the website, making sure every intricate button looked good and worked functionally.

Challenges we ran into

Neither of us had any experience in the three languages. Throughout this project, we learned how to 1) create a JavaScript function, 2) learned the structure of HTML, and 3) spent hours figuring out how to do specific things, such as aligning text and images. Doing all this was a huge challenge for us and we're glad we managed to pull off this ambitious task.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Throughout the many hours we spent working on our project, we made nothing short of breakthroughs. We are very proud of the idea, which our entire website is built upon, our logo, and the interactive experience we created. This website is our vision for the future of college applications.

What we learned

We learned how to code in HTML, JavaScript and CSS. We also learned how to conquer adversity and keep moving forward.

What's next for Showcase

The basic purpose and infrastructure has been laid out, but Showcase could eventually be used nationally, even globally for all colleges to see potential applicants as real people. If our idea lands, the entire application process could be changed for the better. Eventually, new features could allow colleges to directly speak with you. You could add friends and join local communities who share similar interests. There are truly endless possibilities for Showcase.
