Inspiration
We agreed that we've all spent plenty of time struggling to find what to watch next and we decided that we could potentially begin making something that could help with just that.
What it does
This Web App Should Only Be Used on a Smartphone Our app helps users learn what sort of TV shows and movies they might be interested in based off what other films they like and dislike. A user will be shown a film as well as some information about the film, and they will decide whether or not the film is something they would enjoy watching.
How we built it
We utilized the TMDB and the WatchMode API's to collect film information. We used Firebase Firestore as our database to hold each user's information, using React to build our web app.
Challenges we ran into
Product creep was likely the biggest challenge we ran into as we soon learned that we did not have enough time to continually add more features to our original scope. Handling tools that we were not very familiar with also proved to be quite the challenge. Each of us ended up using at least one tool they had no experience with including React and CSS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The thing we were most proud of was getting our Google authentication to work, so that users would be able to sign in using their Google accounts.
What we learned
We learned how to use React hosted on Firebase, using Firestore database, and how to make API requests using Axios.
What's next for Show Finder
We hope to implement new features such as logging in through other providers, implementing a better algorithm for suggestions, and features for sharing results.
