Inspiration
I recently was part of an internal transfer at my day job that included training done solely remotely. I found it challenging to connect with new team members and receive feedback on my job performance. It got me thinking about how co-workers can encourage one another and foster a culture of recognition for all team members.
What it does
Shoutout! provides an easy-to-use dashboard/interface for employees, managers, and senior staff to view and submit recognition for each other. Cultivating a recognition-rich work environment is of tantamount importance (especially with the increase in work-from-home jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
How I built it
This project was built exclusively using the low-code QuickBase environment.
Challenges I ran into
Initially, I was not entirely sure how to visualize the recognitions given to each team member. There were several dimensions that neither a bar nor line graph would successfully convey. Thankfully, the bubble chart proved extremely useful for my uses.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
When given an open-ended task, I tend to struggle with deciding on a final product. I am quite proud of my solution that uses the internal tools of QuickBase in addition to providing a practical real-world solution.
What I learned
As an intermediate programmer, I learned just how useful "DIY" environments can be. It would be relatively easy to spin-up some code to serve an identical purpose, but a solution that puts that same power into the user's hands is hundreds of times better in the long run.
What's next for Shoutout! Team Recognition
Should Shoutout! prove to be popular, I hope to integrate an internal reward system where users can redeem points for gift cards, free lunches, and more.
