Short film_Galactic Thief!

Inspiration

It stems from Blade Runner, The Matrix, and The Fifth Element that I watched in my childhood. After signing up for the Chroma Awards, a story about science fiction, future planets, and a righteous thief began to take shape in my mind.

What it does

First of all, it gave me several inspirational plot points for the story, such as the confrontation on the rooftop and the car chase in the second half of the story. These elements started to enrich the content of this work.

How we built it

Once I had some content, I started to complete the script. The work shouldn’t just be a collection of simple exciting scenes; it needed a relatively complete story, and preferably one with deeper meaning. Therefore, I designed the men in black who are secretly tracking as more frantic and set them as the villains. Meanwhile, the female protagonist has the ability to heal herself, and the mineral she obtained from an unknown source seems both mysterious and righteous. This setting highlights the opposition between good and evil, creates contradictions and conflicts, and also lays the groundwork for a possible sequel.

Challenges we ran into

During the production process, due to the large range of movements, there was a significant inconsistency in the characters’ appearance. Additionally, generating some exaggerated character movements and camera movements was quite difficult. At the same time, there were also major changes in the characters’ faces and clothes.Fortunately, today’s tools such as Vidu, MidJourney, and Kling have relatively strong error-correcting capabilities. So even though the work is not yet perfect, we have made numerous revisions. We even used Kling to redraw parts of the video.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m quite proud of the scene in the first segment where the character jumps off the building and gets on a motorcycle—this might also be a selling point of the opening. The smooth motorcycle chase scene is thrilling and blood-pumping. However, the core of the film lies in a good story, and this time, a solid story supported the plot, which is something that makes me very happy.

What we learned

Through creating this film, I gained a deeper understanding of what these tools can do and which tasks are still relatively difficult for current tools and technologies. Meanwhile, the support of music and sound effects has also elevated the film to a better level, and I am very grateful for that.

What's next for Short film_Galactic Thief!

It’s highly likely that we will only create one more film—one that is rich in a sense of history and time travel, with the plot as the core. It may include a beautiful love story as well as grudges and enmities. Please stay tuned.
