Shore Care

We designed a project centered around cleaning up beaches and raising awareness for a healthier environment by encouraging people to scan items they picked up and contribute to a good cause.

Inspiration

Beaches are full of trash and many organizations are trying to raise awareness so we thought it would be good to create something similar but make it more interactive and fun for people to participate

What it does

We created a website where we describe our goal and allow people to upload what they picked up. Then they can select the amount of that item and contribute to our global statistics

How we built it

We created the back end in python using a pre-trained AI model called YOLOv5. Front end was built using React.js

Challenges we ran into

Implementing the AI and getting the front-end to properly function. Biggest challenge was merging front-end to back-end

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to have the AI scan and item and detect with a decent confidence level as well as having a proper website.

What we learned

It is good to plan out this well in advance and have a group with special skill sets. I also learned how to manage a team properly and get people assigned to task to make them get done faster.

What's next for Shore Care

Plan out ahead in advance and know what everyone is doing. Also start right at the start instead of leaving it for a day. Also ask for more help as being a freshman with limited knowledge made this a difficult but very helpful experience.
