Inspiration
The idea for HomeHop came from a personal struggle while searching for short-term rentals during an internship. We realized how frustrating and time-consuming it was to juggle multiple apps and websites just to compare rental options. With so many scattered reviews, fluctuating prices, and unclear insights, it felt like a tedious full-time task. We wanted to solve this problem by creating a tool that solves everything in one place, making apartment hunting smarter, faster, and easier for everyone.
What it does
HomeHop is a Chrome Extension that revolutionizes how you search for rentals. It aggregates listings, reviews, and prices from multiple platforms into a unified interface. Using Chrome Built-in AI, it provides summarized reviews, highlights the best and worst-rated properties, and identifies the cheapest legitimate options. Features like price tracking, neighborhood comparisons, and amenity-based filters ensure you can find the perfect home tailored to your needs—all without leaving your browser.
How we built it
We developed HomeHop using React for a dynamic and user-friendly interface and Webpack to manage our Chrome Extension architecture. Leveraging Chrome Built-in AI APIs, such as the Summarization API and Rewrite API, we distilled complex rental reviews into clear insights. Data aggregation and scraping techniques were used to pull listings and reviews from multiple sources, and we implemented storage and synchronization using Chrome's local storage APIs.
What we learned
We never had experience of developing Chrome Extension before, so it was the biggest challenge for us to integrate them with Google and APIs, but we are happy how our project turned out successfully!
What's next for HomeHop
The next steps for HomeHop include expanding data sources to cover more platforms and rental types. We plan to refine our filtering system with more advanced AI-powered suggestions, enhance neighborhood insights with visual maps, and integrate real-time alerts for price changes. We can use Translate API to make our project available around the world. Eventually, we aim to launch HomeHop as a comprehensive rental assistant available on multiple browsers and devices, transforming how people find their next home globally.
