🛡️ Shopping Guardian

Inspiration

Online shopping has made it incredibly easy to buy almost anything, but making the right decision is still surprisingly difficult. Students often compare dozens of specifications, ratings, reviews, and prices before buying something expensive like a laptop, phone, or headphones.

The problem isn't a lack of information — it's too much information.

We wanted to build something that could take all of that information and answer a much simpler question:

"Is this actually worth buying for me?"

That idea became Shopping Guardian, an AI-powered shopping decision assistant built specifically with students in mind.

What it does

Shopping Guardian takes product information such as:

• Price
• Rating
• Number of reviews
• Customer review snippets

and turns it into an easy-to-understand purchasing recommendation.

The application provides:

• A clear explanation of the recommendation

Instead of forcing a student to spend an hour researching a product, Shopping Guardian tries to turn that research into a decision they can understand in seconds.

How we built it

The project uses a React frontend connected to a FastAPI backend.

The frontend collects the product information and sends it to our backend through an API. The backend prepares the information and sends it to the Google Gemini API for analysis.

Gemini is used for more than just generating text. It helps us:

1. Understand product specifications.
2. Analyze customer review snippets.
3. Identify common positive and negative patterns.
4. Evaluate whether a product is suitable for students.
5. Generate an explainable recommendation.

The resulting analysis is returned to the frontend as structured data and presented through a simple visual dashboard.
