Inspiration
Shopping Compass makes AI-powered shopping more transparent, helpful, and trustworthy.
What It Does
Shopping Compass is an Alexa+ compatible shopping assistant that recommends products based on budget, priorities, and household needs.
Users can:
- Choose a category and budget.
- Set priorities and preferences.
- Receive explained recommendations.
- Review matched requirements.
- Confirm Amazon handoffs.
It never purchases automatically. Amazon controls checkout.
How We Built It
We built a self-hosted MCP server using Streamable HTTP with three tools:
- list_categories
- recommend_product
- prepare_amazon_cart_handoff
A browser simulator, automated tests, and end-to-end verification support the workflow.
Challenges
We adapted an existing Alexa Shopping Kit implementation to an Alexa+ compatible MCP architecture while maintaining clear boundaries between recommendations, handoffs, and purchases.
Accomplishments
- Built an Alexa+ compatible MCP shopping engine.
- Added transparent recommendations and explicit confirmation.
- Created a browser simulator with automated testing.
- Maintained accurate purchase and commission boundaries.
What We Learned
MCP can connect conversational AI with structured commerce tools while preserving user choice and control.
What’s Next
We plan to expand the catalog, improve personalization, and strengthen Alexa+ integration.
