Inspiration
Online shopping has become incredibly convenient, but convenience can also make the experience feel isolated and repetitive.
People often browse products alone, endlessly scroll through recommendations, compare dozens of options, and make decisions without the opinions or reactions of the friends they would normally shop with.
We wanted to explore a different question:
What if online shopping could feel more like shopping with friends?
That idea became ShopMate — a collaborative shopping experience designed to bring social interaction, discovery, discussion, and shared decision-making into online shopping.
Instead of treating shopping as something people do individually, ShopMate makes it possible to discover products together, share ideas, compare options, and make decisions as a group.
What it does
ShopMate transforms online shopping from a primarily individual activity into a more social and engaging experience.
Users can:
- Discover products together
- Create shopping groups
- Share products with friends
- Compare different options
- Discuss and react to products
- Organize products into shared lists
- Explore deals and recommendations
- Make purchasing decisions together
The experience is designed around active participation rather than passive scrolling.
Instead of:
Scroll → Scroll → Scroll → Buy
ShopMate encourages:
Discover → Share → Discuss → Compare → Decide
For example, a user looking for headphones can create a group, share several options with friends, compare the products, discuss which one they prefer, and make a decision together.
How it works
The core ShopMate experience is designed around collaborative discovery.
1. Discover
Users browse products and discover items across categories.
2. Create a Group
A user can create a shared shopping space for friends or people with similar interests.
3. Share
Products can be shared with the group so everyone can view the same options.
4. Compare
Users can compare products based on useful information such as price, features, ratings, and other available details.
5. Discuss and Decide
Instead of making the decision alone, users can involve their friends and reach a shared decision.
This creates a more interactive online experience and gives users a reason to participate rather than simply consume content.
The problem we are solving
Digital entertainment and online experiences are increasingly optimized for endless consumption.
Users can spend large amounts of time scrolling through:
- Product recommendations
- Videos
- Social feeds
- Deals
- Personalized content
But more content does not necessarily create more meaningful engagement.
Shopping can be especially isolating because it is often treated as a completely individual activity.
Friends may still want each other's opinions, but sharing screenshots, sending links through different apps, comparing products manually, and keeping track of everyone’s preferences can be inconvenient.
ShopMate addresses that problem by putting the collaborative part directly into the shopping experience.
Why it fits Connect Online
ShopMate is designed around the idea of making time spent online more intentional and engaging.
Rather than encouraging passive consumption, it encourages users to:
- Participate
- Explore
- Share
- Discuss
- Collaborate
- Make decisions together
The goal is not simply to help someone buy something faster.
The goal is to make the online experience more social and enjoyable.
ShopMate gives people a reason to involve their friends instead of experiencing the entire shopping journey alone.
What makes ShopMate different
The main difference is the social layer around product discovery and decision-making.
Traditional shopping experiences are generally optimized around:
Search → Product → Checkout
ShopMate adds a collaborative layer:
Search → Discover → Share → Compare → Discuss → Decide
That changes shopping from an individual task into a shared activity.
The product is also designed to make collaboration part of the experience rather than forcing users to move between separate messaging and shopping tools.

How we built it
ShopMate is a modern web application built around a social shopping workflow.
The application combines a responsive user interface, product discovery, shared shopping experiences, product comparison, and collaborative organization into one experience.
The architecture is designed to keep the main experience simple and understandable.
The product experience can be summarized as:
Discover → Share → Compare → Collaborate → Decide
The project also uses AI functionality where it adds value to product discovery and assistance rather than making every interaction dependent on AI.
AI usage
AI is used as a supporting layer within the product experience.
It can help with tasks such as:
- Product-related assistance
- Understanding user requests
- Helping users discover relevant options
- Providing contextual explanations
- Supporting product comparison and decision-making
The AI functionality is integrated into the product rather than being the product itself.
The core shopping and collaboration experience remains understandable without requiring users to interact with a chatbot.
User experience philosophy
ShopMate is intentionally designed to move users away from passive browsing.
Instead of endlessly scrolling through products by themselves, users have opportunities to interact with friends and actively participate in the decision-making process.
The design emphasizes:
- Clear navigation
- Simple interactions
- Visual product comparison
- Social participation
- Shared discovery
- Accessible information
- Minimal friction
The goal is for users to feel like they are shopping together, even when they are physically apart.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing shopping functionality with social interaction.
Adding too many social features could make the experience feel more like a traditional social network than a useful shopping product.
We therefore focused on collaboration directly around the product itself.
Another challenge was reducing friction.
A collaborative shopping experience only works when sharing and comparing products is easier than simply sending a link through another application.
The interface therefore focuses on making product sharing and comparison simple and immediately understandable.
A further challenge was ensuring that the experience remained useful even when users were not actively collaborating.
The product needed to work as a shopping tool while also becoming more valuable when friends participate.
Accomplishments we're proud of
We are proud of creating a product experience that connects two activities that are normally separate:
shopping and social interaction.
Instead of adding a chat application beside a shopping application, ShopMate makes collaboration part of the shopping journey.
We are also proud of the way the product communicates its core workflow:
Discover → Share → Compare → Decide
This makes the concept easy to understand while still giving users multiple ways to participate.
What we learned
This project reinforced the importance of designing around user behavior rather than simply adding more features.
A product can have many capabilities, but the experience becomes stronger when every feature supports one clear purpose.
We also learned that meaningful online connection does not necessarily require creating another social feed.
Sometimes connection can come from doing an activity together.
In ShopMate's case, that activity is discovering and deciding what to buy.
What we changed
A mentor pointed out that our first-time shopping flow required too many steps before users could invite friends. We reduced the onboarding flow and moved group creation earlier in the experience. This made the collaborative part of ShopMate visible much sooner and made the core concept easier to understand.
Impact
ShopMate explores a broader idea about digital experiences:
Being online does not have to mean being alone.
Shopping is only one example of an activity that can become more enjoyable when shared.
By combining product discovery with collaboration, ShopMate aims to make online time:
- More social
- More intentional
- More interactive
- More enjoyable
The project demonstrates how an everyday digital activity can be redesigned around shared participation rather than passive consumption.
What's next
Future versions of ShopMate could expand the collaborative experience with:
- Better group discovery
- Shared recommendations
- Group voting
- More expressive reactions
- Real-time collaboration
- Collaborative wishlists
- Personalized group recommendations
- Shared shopping challenges
- More accessible interaction modes
The long-term vision is to explore how everyday online activities can become more meaningful when people experience them together.
Conclusion
ShopMate started with a simple observation:
Shopping online is convenient, but it does not always feel social.
ShopMate reimagines the experience around collaboration.
Instead of browsing alone, users can:
Discover together.
Share together.
Compare together.
Decide together.
Our goal is to make online time feel less passive and more connected.
