Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project came from the frustration we experienced from having to manually constantly check websites for our favorite products to come back in stock. When sites don't have that "Notify when back in stock" button, it has an annoying impact for our shopaholic selves.
What it does
Without having to deal with the inconvenience and inconsistencies between various websites, users can build and maintain a comprehensive, feature-loaded wishlist. Our web app displays stock status of items added to your wishlist, and sends out notifications via email when items come back in stock.
How we built it
We built our app using a mix of React, Tailwind, Typescript, Django, and PostgreSQL. We built a web scraping script that when given a link, scrapes the website to check if a product is back in stock.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenges we faced involved inexperience. Half of our group had never even worked communally on Github before, let alone worked with this tech stack.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were dedicated enough to this hackathon that we were able to set up a project and create something together despite all the challenges and the natural time constraint of a hackathon. For some of us, it was our first-ever hackathon, but we were still able to make something out of it.
What we learned
Not only did we improve our communication and teamwork skills, but we learned how to setup a complex project from scratch. We also learned how to collaborate together on Github.
What's next for ShopAlert
We want to continue working on this web app in the future and hopefully pack the site with more features. We look forward to making the app a truly reliable wishlist. In the future, we would like to add some type of connection between users, and allow users to be notified via phone number.
