Headless Commerce with Smart AI Agent: Redefining Social Shopping

🚀 About the Project

One casual evening while scrolling through Instagram, I came across an ad for some general household items. It caught my attention—but like most ads, clicking it redirected me to an external site or app to complete the purchase. I wondered, Why do we still need to install separate apps or navigate clunky websites just to buy something?

That moment of friction sparked a bigger realization: from a business perspective, maintaining apps and high-performance servers is not only expensive, but also inefficient, especially for one-time or impulse purchases.

This led me to explore a smarter way to shop: what if purchases could happen directly inside chat apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, or even Instagram DM?

💡 Inspiration

That question brought me to the concept of Headless Commerce — a modern approach where the front-end (what users interact with) is separated from the back-end (where the data and business logic live). With this, customers don’t need an app; they can complete everything from registration to order placement, tracking, and product queries, all within a chat interface.

What truly sealed the idea was imagining a Smart AI Agent — a digital shopping assistant that could manage the entire commerce experience inside chat apps.

🛠️ How We Built It

From the past 3–4 months, I’ve been working on building AI Agents within Salesforce using Agentforce. With this hackathon, I teamed up with three other passionate developers to prototype this idea:

  • We designed a conversational commerce flow where users can:

    • View product information
    • Ask questions about availability
    • Place an order
    • Track the shipment
    • Get smart product recommendations
  • We leveraged Agentforce capabilities to:

    • Train a conversational AI agent
    • Integrate backend systems to fetch order & product data
    • Simulate real-time customer conversations
  • Due to current Salesforce Agentforce limitations, we were unable to use images and links (replaced this with a placeholder), but we envision this being handled smoothly in future versions.

💡 What We Learned

  • The power of combining Headless Commerce with AI agents to deliver a seamless shopping experience
  • How to design conversation flows that feel natural and helpful
  • The importance of memory in agents — for example, remembering past purchases to recommend future ones
  • Salesforce Agentforce's strengths in enterprise integration, and where we might need to innovate around current limitations

😓 Challenges We Faced

  • Agentforce sandbox doesn’t yet allow use of production-level assets (e.g., live product images or links)
  • Integrating multiple chat platforms into one unified experience is a work-in-progress
  • Fine-tuning the agent’s product recommendation engine based on chat context and history

🌟 The Vision

Our team’s long-term vision is to build a full-fledged Headless Commerce AI Agent that can be deployed directly in ads, messengers, and social platforms, removing the need for apps or bulky websites.

This not only saves memory for users and hosting costs for businesses, but also brings commerce right into the conversations people are already having.

Smart, fast, and frictionless — that’s the future we’re building.
