Inspiration

I was inspired by the Hub Ocean Data and Cognite challenge to utilize some very interesting datasets on shipping emissions and create an app to inspire individuals and institutions to do more to help the planet.

What it does

This app helps users explore, visualize, and learn more about CO2 emissions from different types of vessels in different parts of the world over time. It helps contextualize the amount of CO2 emissions and will hopefully serve as a powerful call to action.

How I built it

Used various technologies like: Python, Azure, Visual Studio, Streamlit, HUB Ocean, Maritime Regions API

Challenges I ran into

Due to the time constraint, there were some features I couldn't ship on time. Couldn't get Azure Databricks working unfortunately so could only work on my local computer, which limited me to a smaller dataset (my poor computer was whirring away the whole time!).

Additional features that were planned but not implemented due to lack of time include: 1) a geolocation feature so that the first visualization generated is based on the sea area closest to the user's IP address, 2) a box where users can input an email to their local political representative encouraging them to take action on protecting the ocean, and 3) a way to view green and blue corridors on the visualization and visualize the impact they would have.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First time ever that I used Streamlit Cloud - it was pretty great :)

What we learned

There are some really cool datasets out there!
