Inspiration

Newport News Shipbuilding hosted an IoT-based challenge to improve safety in a ship yard.

What it does

When a single wearable sensor detects a hazard, such as air quality issues, it broadcasts a warning to nearby wearables and to a central monitoring service. This allows nearby employees to evacuate the area, and it allows an emergency response team to take action.

How we built it

We built it using WiFi Mesh for the device-to-device communication and traditional WiFi for the central monitoring service communication. Each wearable is an ESP32, and the monitoring service is a Javascript-based web server. The device data is stored in a Google Firebase real-time database.

Challenges we ran into

Communication from the wearables to Firebase.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

All of it.

What we learned

IoT communication and web development.

What's next for Ship Safety

Improve the communication and sensing capabilities.
