We had access to the really interesting AIS dataset which over the 24 hours we were able to learn quite a bit about the data available. There is over 15000 vessels and unfortunately very little consistency between ships, with some having no name others having no callsign making it difficult for a human to uniquely identify a ship.
We had hoped to integrate Alexa into this application but this proved difficult and we were forced to abandon it.
What it does
The application provides a number of visualization options such as viewing the path a vessel has taken by plotting it's route, selecting some random vessel and a heatmap of the North Sea where it's possible to identify common routes amongst vessels.
How we built it
We built this application using Node.js with Express, connected to a MongoDB with Mongoose.JS Modelling and used Mapbox for visualization.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to connect Alexa to our application to provide information on ships but this was not possible.
