Inspiration
As college students, we hate wasting money, especially when we don’t have to. One financial frustration we had was having to always pay for shipping on small purchases as we’d never spend enough to qualify for free shipping. We knew that many students were having the same problem and realized that since many students, especially first years, lived near each other, so if we could match people together, they could combine orders and save on shipping. We created Ship’d to make the matching process quick and easy for all UVA students and so that we never have to waste money paying for shipping again.
What it does
Matches you with UVA students that are shopping at the same store so you can coordinate and qualify for free shipping.
How we built it
We used Django, a python web development framework to build beautiful frontend with a SQLlite database as the backend. Using the Bootstrap framework, we designed each page to look clean and crisp to give a modern look to a modern website.
Challenges we ran into
Adjusting the formatting on our pages regarding button design and sizing and some of the backend when uploading to Heroku caused problems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a simple website that people could use today. We’re also proud of the fact that we made something that better the lives of others both financially and would allow for people to connect with other UVA students with similar interests.
What we learned
Through this project, we were all able to learn more about Django and web development as well as how to better navigate Bootstrap.
What's next for Ship'd
We can try to expand it to other colleges, so that more students are able to use this website. As the database of users increases, we can also find ways to better filter the matches page, so that users can efficiently find their matches. In addition, companies can start implementing Ship’d onto their websites, making it easier for customers to directly look for matches while shopping. Collaborating with companies will also make the payment process much better and potentially allow people to split the prices in one purchase.
