Inspiration

The inspiration behind this app idea stems from the app, Duolingo. We wanted to really think outside the box and come up with something that has never been done before. We wanted to find a way to teach people how to speak Singlish, and that's how we came up with things like Shiok Points and different challenges to learn Singlish.

What it does

Our app, Shiok Speak, allows for you to learn Singlish through a fun and interactive experience. Users can click on a certain Singlish phrase or word, and it will play out and people can learn how to pronounce it, as well as its definition. To motivate people, we have a points system (shiok points) and daily challenges that allow you to gain more shiok points.

How we built it

We built this through Swift and SwiftUI on Xcode, and we integrated things like mp3 players, so that people can hear the singlish pronunciation. We also integrated progress bars, light and dark modes and leaderboards, things that we've never come across despite having some experience in Swift

Challenges we ran into

Time was definitely the biggest challenge throughout this hackathon. We had to utilize our time very wisely, down to each minute. We mainly coded on three devices, and integrating all that code was a very hard task, taking us an hour just to put it all together. Like we said earlier, there were parts of the app we had never coded before, which was very difficult to do.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the app we made in the end. Yes, a few functionalities were not able to be integrated, but in the end we are extremely proud of this app, and we think that with more time, this app can really be revolutionary. We just hope that everybody feels the same.

What we learned

We definitely learnt about teamwork, and collaboration, and the biggest challenge of it all, time, which we learnt to work against. There are some essential life skills that we will definitely take away

What's next for Shiok Speak

We aim to maybe publish the app once we have fine tuned it and added more functionalities, we also want to increase accessibility, such that as an example, visually impaired people can also use our app to learn singlish, or someone with hearing difficulties can learn singlish.
