Inspiration
The inspiration behind Shinobi Self comes from the world of Naruto and the belief that mental wellness can be improved through gamification. By incorporating character paths, daily quests, mood tracking, and XP progression, we aim to help users grow mentally while having fun on their journey, much like a ninja striving for strength and wisdom.
What it does
Shinobi Self is a Naruto-themed mobile app designed to support mental wellness. It provides a unique, gamified experience by allowing users to choose between different character paths—Naruto, Sasuke, or Sakura—each with a focus on different aspects of mental health. Users engage in daily missions, track their mood, earn XP, and level up through ninja ranks as they work towards a healthier mindset. The app rewards users with achievements and motivational quotes as they progress.
How we built it
We built Shinobi Self using Flutter to ensure cross-platform compatibility. The app utilizes Riverpod for state management and employs a feature-based architecture with clear separation of concerns. We focused on creating a Naruto-inspired UI/UX, with chakra blue, orange, and silver colors, custom text styles, and immersive animations. We also integrated local storage for user preferences, progress, and mood tracking.
Working Functionalities
- Character Selection & Onboarding: Choose from Naruto, Sasuke, or Sakura with themed UI
- Daily Missions: Generate missions tailored to the selected character path
- XP System & Rank Progression: Level up through ninja ranks: Genin → Chunin → Jounin → Hokage
- Mood Tracking: Daily mood check-ins with personalized feedback
- Rewards System: Unlock motivational quotes, stickers, and badges as you progress
- Customization: Light/dark mode, sound effects, and animated backgrounds
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we faced was implementing the XP system in a way that felt rewarding and motivating, ensuring users stayed engaged. Additionally, designing character-specific missions and making sure the app's Naruto theme was not only visually appealing but also intuitive and functional presented a challenge in balancing fun with usability.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a seamless app experience with a strong Naruto-themed aesthetic that immerses users. The character selection and mission systems provide real value to users, helping them to improve their mental wellness while keeping them engaged. We are especially excited about the fully functional mood tracking and rewards system, as well as the achievement-based progression that encourages positive habits.
What we learned
Through the development of Shinobi Self, we learned how to combine game design with mental wellness techniques. Balancing usability with gamification was a key takeaway, as was refining the user interface to ensure accessibility. We also learned how to use Riverpod for state management effectively in a Flutter project, and how to integrate local storage in a way that supports a smooth user experience.
What's next for Shinobi Self
The next steps for Shinobi Self include adding more ninja SFX and animated elements to enhance user engagement. We also plan to expand the variety of daily missions, introduce a "Hokage Wisdom" feature with daily motivational quotes, and enable social sharing of achievements. Additionally, we will be focusing on community challenges to encourage users to share their mental wellness journeys with others.
